Oliver Piazzi and the Life L190: A Motor Valley Story
A Formula 1 car comes back to life in the heart of Motor Valley
- Introduction
There are stories that do not end when the engines are switched off.
Sometimes they remain silent for years, preserved in a workshop, in old technical drawings, in mechanical components carefully kept aside and, above all, in the memories of the people who lived them.
This is one of those stories.
It is the story of the Life L190, one of the most unusual Formula 1 cars ever built, and of Oliver Piazzi, the mechanic who experienced that extraordinary adventure first-hand and who, many years later, helped bring the car back to life.
It is also a story deeply rooted in our region: Modena and its Motor Valley.
- Formigine, at the end of the 1980s: a dream begins
The story began just a few kilometres from Modena, in Formigine, at the end of the 1980s.
Here, Life Racing Engines embarked on one of the most ambitious and unconventional projects in Italian motorsport: creating a Formula 1 car around an entirely original engine.
Oliver Piazzi joined the project in September 1988 and became the team’s chief mechanic.
It was the beginning of an adventure that would eventually take a small team from the Modena area to the highest level of international motorsport.
In 1990, the Life L190 entered the Formula 1 World Championship.
But at the heart of this car was something even more extraordinary.
- An engine unlike any other: Franco Rocchi’s W12
The Life project was built around an engine conceived by Franco Rocchi, a former Ferrari engineer: a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre W12.
Twelve cylinders arranged in three banks.
It was an extremely unusual technical solution, created at a time when Formula 1 regulations had returned to naturally aspirated engines.
The W12 represented an ambitious attempt to combine compact dimensions, power and technical innovation.
Looking at the engine today, with its distinctive intake trumpets and complex architecture, it is easy to understand why it remains one of the most fascinating and unconventional engines in Formula 1 history.
It was a courageous idea.
Perhaps too courageous for the resources available to such a small team.
- 14 Grands Prix. No race starts.
The 1990 Formula 1 World Championship proved extremely difficult for Life Racing Engines.
The Life L190 was driven during the season by Gary Brabham and later by Bruno Giacomelli.
The team entered 14 Grands Prix, but the car never managed to progress beyond pre-qualifying and therefore never started a Formula 1 race.
The project came to an end after just one season.
From a sporting point of view, the Life L190 never achieved the results its creators had dreamed of.
But motorsport history is not made only by victories.
It is also made by ideas, experiments, courage and people willing to attempt something that had never been done before.
And this is precisely why the story of the Life L190 did not end in 1990.
- Back to Life
Many years later, that Formula 1 car returned to the hands of people who knew its story intimately.
Among them was Oliver Piazzi.
Components preserved over the years, original parts, technical drawings and mechanical knowledge made it possible to begin the painstaking process of bringing the Life L190 back to its original configuration.
Piece by piece.
The chassis, suspension, brakes, bodywork and mechanical components gradually returned to their places.
And most importantly, the car was once again equipped with the extraordinary original W12 engine around which the entire Life project had been created.
Seeing the car today in the workshop is like opening a door into another era of Formula 1.
An era when an ambitious idea, a drawing board and the skills of a small group of technicians and mechanics could still give birth to a Formula 1 car.
The restored Life L190 was eventually able to return to the track and appear at historic motorsport events, including the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
A car that had never managed to start a Formula 1 Grand Prix had finally returned to life.
- More than a Formula 1 car
For Oliver, this is not simply a restoration project.
He is not just working on an old Formula 1 car.
He is preserving a part of his own history.
Every component, every technical solution and every detail of the Life L190 brings back the memory of the people who worked on the project and of a unique moment in Italian motorsport.
And perhaps this is what makes this story so special.
The Life L190 may not be remembered for victories or championship points, but more than thirty years later it can still inspire curiosity, passion and admiration.
- The Motor Valley of people
When we talk about Motor Valley, we naturally think of Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Pagani and the extraordinary cars that have made this part of Emilia-Romagna famous throughout the world.
But Motor Valley is much more than its great brands.
It is also made up of workshops, technical drawings, tools, engines and thousands of mechanics, engineers, craftsmen and enthusiasts.
People like Oliver Piazzi.
People who have spent their lives imagining, building, repairing and preserving extraordinary machines.
At Le Noci di Feo, we love sharing this side of our region with our guests.
Not only the museums and famous cars, but also the lesser-known stories that help explain why the passion for engines is so deeply rooted in Modena.
Because Motor Valley is not simply a place on a map.
It is a culture.
A passion passed from one generation to another.
And sometimes, in a workshop just a few kilometres away, a Formula 1 car that everyone thought belonged to the past can come back to life.
Here are some photos documenting this remarkable story and the ongoing work on the Life L190:

8 — THIS IS MOTOR VALLEY
Motor Valley is not only about famous brands. It is also about the people behind the machines: mechanics, engineers, technicians and craftsmen who dedicate their lives to cars and never stop believing in their dreams.
Some stories never end. They simply wait for someone tenacious enough to set them in motion again. “That is also why we love sharing the story of Motor Valley with our guests: not just by pointing out places to visit, but by seeking out those often-hidden stories that have made this region unique in the world.”
